| Biochemist, born in Toronto, Ontario, SE Canada. He studied at Chicago, and afterwards held posts in a number of US universities. He showed that the oxygen formed in plants by photosynthesis is derived from water (and not from CO2); discovered the carbon isotope 14C, afterwards much used as a biochemical tracer; studied photosynthetic bacteria and nitrogen-fixing bacteria; and contributed to the discovery of messenger-RNA. |
