| biography:
| German politician and lawyer, born in Wanzleben, C Germany. In 1974–5 he was general secretary of the liberal Free Democratic Party (FDP) and later became its chairman (1985–8). He served as economics minister (1984–8), twice served as a deputy in the Bundestag (1972–80, 1984–9), and was a member of the European Parliament (1973–84). A member of the European Commission since 1989, he also held the post of vice-president until 1995. |
