| Novelist, born in Copenhagen, Denmark. He spent his boyhood on the I of Bornholm, near Nexø (from where he took his name). A shepherd then a shoemaker, with the help of a patron he became a teacher, and from 1901 supported himself by writing. In 1906 he won fame throughout Europe with his major novel Pelle Erobreren (1915–17, Pelle the Conqueror), describing his life of poverty, and the growth of the Labour movement with which he became involved. His other major work is Ditte Mennskebarn (1920–2, Ditte, Daughter of Man). |
