| biography:
| Didactic writer and Augustinian preacher, born in Córdoba, S Spain. Close to Juan II and Enrique IV, he taught in the universities of Toulouse and Salamanca. Much of his writing in Latin and Spanish has been lost, but some works are available in vol 171 (1964) of the Biblioteca de Autores Españoles (BAE). His chief works were De próspera y adversa fortuna (1440–53) edited as Compendio de la fortuna by P F Rubio Áñvarez (El Escorial, 1958); Jardín de las nobles donzellas (1500) written before 1467 for the Infanta Isabel and defending her right to the throne of Castilla; and Tratado de la predestinación edited by Aníbal Sánchez Fraile (1956). The fourth book by Fray Martín in the BAE is Libro del regimiento de los señores, also in didactic vein. |
