| Feminist and educationist, born in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. Educated privately and at Cornell University, she took a PhD at Zürich (1882), and became dean and professor of English at Bryn Mawr College for Women, which she had helped to organize (president 1894–1922). She established summer schools for women working in industry (1921), campaigned for women's right to vote, and wrote The Higher Education of Women (1900). |
