| Painter and writer, one of the pioneers of American modern art, born in Lewiston, Maine, USA. In 1892 he won a scholarship to the Cleveland School of Art, and in 1898 moved to New York City. He visited France and Germany (1912–15), experimenting with the latest styles. Inspired by Kandinsky and Franz Marc, his work became abstract, and he exhibited with the Blaue Reiter group. |
