| biography:
| Italian patriot and soldier, born in Milan, Lombardy, N Italy. He fought with Garibaldi's volunteers in the 1st Italian Independence War, and was one of the leaders of the defence of Rome, holding off the French attack on the Vascello villa for 26 days. He also took part in the 2nd Independence War, and led a contingent of volunteers in support of Garibaldi's Thousand. He was first a deputy and then a senator of the Italian parliament. |
