| Italian politician, born in Catania, Sicily, S Italy. A deputy from 1882, as foreign affairs minister (1905–6, 1910–14), he promoted Italy's colonial expansion, and supported the Libyan venture (1911) and a friendly relationship with France and Great Britain. He renewed the Triple Alliance Treaty and was in favour of Italy's neutrality in World War 1. |
