| biography:
| Italian politician and prime minister (1881–2, 1886–98), born in Palermo, Sicily, S Italy. He was a deputy of the right and interior minister (1869), then moved to the opposition when the left came to power. He moved closer to Crispi and became prime minister (1881–2) with the aim of reorganizing the budget. Prime minister again in 1886, he negotiated the Addis Abeba peace with Ethiopia after the Adua defeat. He resigned following his ruthless handling of the 1898 social riots in Milan. |
