| British army officer, the eldest son of the Duke of Rutland, whose reputation was made in the Seven Years' War (1756–63) when he led the British cavalry in a major victory over the French at Warburg (1760). He became a popular hero, and in 1763 was appointed Master-General of the Ordnance. |
