| biography:
| Historian and poet, born in Málaga, S Spain. The protégé of the Marqués de la Ensenada, he obtained a commission to collect data for his work Historia monumental de España, and from 1752 amassed 67 volumes of documents. He was involved in Ensenada's downfall, was imprisoned 1766–72, and died from apoplexy shortly after his release. As a critic he was a disciple of Luzán, affirming French dramatic principles against the Spanish theatre of the Golden Age in Orígenes de la poesía castellana (Málaga, 1754). Velázquez was the first to collect the poems of Francisco de la Torre, but attributed them to Quevedo. His own poems are reprinted in Vol 67 (1875) of the Biblioteca de Autores Españoles. His other works include Anales de la nación española desde el tiempo más remoto hasta la entrada de los romanos (Málaga, 1759) and Noticia del viage de España hecho de orden del Rey (1765). |
