| biography:
| Businesswoman, born in Texas, USA. She trained as a lawyer at George Washington and San Francisco Universities, joined a Georgia law firm, and later founded the Georgia Gazette. She then became president of the Economist Newspaper Group in New York (1985–92), and its chief executive in London (1992–6). She joined the Pearson group as its chief executive in 1997, the first woman to head one of the UK's top 100 companies, and was named businesswoman of the year in 1998. She became chair of the company in late 1999. |
