| French composer of Romanian origin, born in Bucharest, Romania. The Enesco prize led him to Paris, where he studied at the Conservatoire with Messiaen, Aubin, and Boulanger. He attended the Ecole Normale de Musique and won the Prix Italia with his ballet Le Joueur de Flûte in 1952. He joined the ‘Groupe de Recherche de Musique Concrète’, composed ballet music for Bejart, founded the ensemble Ars Nova (1953), and was a pioneer of collective improvization. He made his name with 24 Préludes pour orchestre (1958) and his Concerto pour piano, and was awarded the Grand Prix National de Musique in 1963. He brought new combinations and uses of instruments, surrealist tendencies, and aleatoric music to his works, such as Paradis Perdus (1967). Other works include the opera Candide, the ballet Eloge de la Folie, chamber music, and the symphonies 14 Stations and Nana Symphonie. |
