| Geologist, born in San Saba, Texas, USA. He taught geology at Columbia University (1931–41), worked as a researcher and consultant for Shell Oil (1943–63), and became a geophysicist for the US Geological Survey (1964–76) while concurrently serving as a visiting professor at major US universities. His studies on the physics of subterranean fluid movement led to revolutionary changes in oil and gas production technology. |
