| Italian general, born in Modena, Emilia-Romagna, N Italy. He was in charge of the Italian troops that fought alongside Franco's forces in the Spanish Civil War. Head of the army's general staff during World War 2, he escaped to Brindisi after the 1943 armistice. He was tried for his Fascist connection and for abandoning the defence of Rome, and sentenced to life imprisonment, but this was overturned in 1948. |
