| biography:
| Portuguese politican, prime minister (1976–8, 1983–5), and president (1986–96), born in Lisbon, Portugal. He studied at Lisbon and Paris, became politically active in the Democratic Socialist movement from his early 20s, and was imprisoned on 12 occasions. In 1968 he was deported by Salazar, and lived in exile in Paris (1970–4), then returned to co-found the Social Democratic Party. He was elected to the Assembly and was soon brought into the government. In 1986 he became Portugal's first civilian president for 60 years, and was re-elected in 1991. |
