| Venetian politician, born in Venice, Veneto, NE Italy. A scion of a family that had already produced two doges; he became doge himself in 1354, succeeding Andrea Dandolo, and was defeated by Genoa at Portolungo in 1354. Accused by the aristocracy of plotting to install himself as absolute ruler, he was condemned to be beheaded. His story inspired a number of writers, among them Byron and Swinburne, as well as an opera by Donizetti. |
