| biography:
| Dutch economist and politician, born in Voorschoten, W Netherlands. He became alderman, then professor in Amsterdam, and MP for the Vrijzinnig Democratische Bond (VDB). In 1913 he was minister of agriculture, trade, and industry, and as minister of finance (1914–18) worked to limit the effects of World War 1 on trade. He believed in co-operating with and improving the social position of the working class, but was a strong opponent of socialism and Marxism. |
