| Dancer, born in Paris, France. A child performer, the daughter of an acrobat, she appeared in London in pantomime, making her Paris debut in 1718. She first performed with the Paris Opéra in 1727. One of the pioneers of dance without masks or elaborate hairstyles, she also created roles of her own, notably in Pygmalion (1733). She is considered one of the pioneers of the ballet d'action (‘ballet with a story’). |
