| biography:
| Catholic nun and religious founder, born in Lyon, SC France. She moved to New Zealand in 1860 to do missionary work among the mainly rural Maori people, arriving in Wellington in 1899 to work with the urban poor. She undertook commercial production of Maori herbal remedies and published books in the Maori language. In 1892 she founded a religious order to extend and continue her charitable work, the Daughters of Our Lady of Compassion. |
