| Mathematician, born in Lyon, SC France. He became professor at the Ecole Polytechnique (1876–1912) and at the Collège de France. He pioneered group theory, wrote on the theory of linear differential equations, and on the theory of functions, which he applied to the curve which bears his name. His work brought full understanding of the importance of the pioneering work done by Galois. |
