| biography:
| Austrian statesman and chancellor (1753–92), born in Vienna, Austria. He distinguished himself at the Congress of Aix-la-Chapelle (1748), and as Austrian ambassador at the French court (1750–2). As chancellor, he instigated the Diplomatic Revolution, and directed Austrian politics for almost 40 years under Maria Theresa and Joseph II. He was a liberal patron of arts and sciences. |
