| biography:
| Catalan painter, born in Reus, NE Spain. A member of a family well known for its artistic affiliations, his paternal grandfather had exhibited his waxwork collections for many years in villages and his father worked as a sculptor and carpenter. In 1847 Marià started to learn drawing in a private school. Within a few years both his parents died and he was brought up by his grandfather, who encouraged his precocious talent. In 1852 they went to Barcelona and on his grandfather's recommendation he was admitted to the workshop of the sculptor Domènec Talarn, who obtained a place for him in the Escola de Belles Arts. In 1853, finding himself favouring painting, he joined the workshop of his schoolmaster Claudi Lorenzale. His works include the watercolour Il Contino, now in the Museum of Modern Art in Barcelona, La Morta, El tribunal de l'Alhambra, L'elecció de model, and La platja d'Òstia. |
