| biography:
| Dancer, born in Brussels, Belgium of French parents. She won European fame for her performances at the Paris Opéra, where she made her debut in 1726, and is said to have been responsible for dancing in slippers without raised heels, and the shortening of the traditional ballet skirt to calf length, which allowed more complicated steps to be seen. She was probably the first woman to dance the entrechat-quatre, a movement in which dancers leap and criss-cross their legs four times before touching ground. She was also one of the first celebrities to lend her name to merchandizing shoes and wigs. |
