| Orchardist, born in Australia. In the 1860s she was growing various seedlings in her orchard in Eastwood, near Sydney, and experimented with a hardy French crab-apple from the cooler climate of Tasmania. From this was developed the late-ripening Granny Smith apple which, because of its excellent keeping qualities, formed for many years the bulk of Australia's apple exports. |
