| Trade unionist and British stateswoman, born in Chard, Somerset, SW England, UK. She became chairman of the TUC in 1923, the same year she entered parliament, and as Labour minister of labour (1929–31) was the first woman to be a British cabinet minister. She lost her seat in 1931, and was created a Companion of Honour in 1948. |
