| Novelist of Jewish origin, born in Ginneken en Bavel, The Netherlands. During World War 2, she went into hiding while her family was deported. In 1957 she made her debut with Het bittere kruid (Bitter Herbs), a chronicle in which she describes the war experiences from the perspective of a young girl. The book was a big success, translated into several languages, and made into a film (with which she was not entirely happy). The war, the persecution of Jews, and the loneliness as a consequence of this, are themes which can be found throughout her entire oeuvre. Her prose has a restrained and sober style, but between the lines the pain and horror is tangible. |
