| Dutch politician, born in Arnhem, E Netherlands. She studied physics and mathematics at Utrecht, taught in Nijmegen (1932–49), and was vice-president (1943–53) of the Union of Women Voluntary Workers. In 1946 with Wally van Linschot she founded the RC Women's Debate, of which she was president until 1950. She represented Dutch women's organizations at the UN General Assembly in 1947 and was a member of the Dutch delegation (1948–50, 1952). She was an MP (Katholieke Volkspartij, 1948–56, 1963–6), a member of the consultative committees of the Council of Europe (from 1949), and of the ECSC (from 1952). As minister for social affairs (1956–63) she became the first Dutch woman to hold the office of minister, and in 1966–71 she was minister for culture, recreation, and social affairs. In 1971 she became a minister of state (again the first woman to hold the rank) and from 1975 she was a member of the Council of State. Interested in EU and international church affairs, she presided over various national and international Justitia et Pax committees, and from 1971 chaired the international section of the Council of Churches. |
