| biography:
| Freedman of Rome who invented the Tironian system of shorthand. A friend and amanuensis of Cicero, he devised his system in order to take down dictation and record speeches. He was the author of a lost Life of Cicero and editor of some of Cicero's letters. His shorthand system was taught in Roman schools, and was in widespread use for several centuries. |
