| biography:
| Roman soldier and emperor. A former governor of Gaul, he purchased power on 28 March 193 by bribing the praetorian guard in a famous ‘auction of the empire’ held after the murder of Pertinax (who ruled for three months in 193). He did not hold power for long, as the Senate soon declared for his rival Lucius Septimius Severus and deposed him, and he was murdered in his palace. |
