| Christian Gnostic believer. A wealthy shipowner of Sinope in Pontus, in c.140 he went to Rome, where he founded the Marcionites (144), who opposed the ‘just’ God of the Old Testament to the ‘good’ God of the New Testament. . He was expelled from the Church as a heretic the same year, but his Gnostic sect flourished during the 2nd-c. |
