| Anatomist, born near Bologna, N Italy. He studied medicine at Bologna, became professor at Pisa, Messina, and Bologna, and from 1691 was chief physician to Pope Innocent XII. The founder of microscopic anatomy, he described the major types of plant and animal structures, and did investigative work, notably on silkworms and the embryology of chicks. |
