| biography:
| Poet, born in Douai, N France. Her family was ruined in the Revolution and moved to the French colony of Gaudeloupe. She returned to Paris on her mother's death, earned a living by acting at the Opéra-Comique and the Odéon, and made an unhappy marriage with a mediocre actor, Prosper Lanchantiér (called Valmore). When illness threatened her stage voice, she turned to writing, producing poignant poetry, including Les Pleurs (1833), Pauvres Fleurs (1839), and Bouquets et prières (1843), which expressed her sadness for her two deceased daughters. She also wrote an autobiographical prose work, L'Atelier d'un peintre (1833). |
