| Film director, born in Paris, France. He trained as a film technician, later working as an assistant to René Clair. From 1931 his collaboration as director with the poet and scriptwriter Jacques Prévert resulted in a series of outstanding productions, including Quai des brumes (1938, trans Port of Shadows), Le Jour se lève (1939, Daybreak) and Les Enfants du paradis (1944, Children of Paradise). After the break-up of the partnership in 1949, his late work was irregular and less distinguished. |
