| Russian specialist and educator, born in Moscow, Russia. Emigrating to the USA (1941) to escape World War 2, he finished his education and taught history at Clark University, Worcester, MA (1949–61). He taught longest at Columbia University (1961), where he focused largely on Russian history and was named Bakhmeteff Professor of Russian Studies (1973). He was a member of the US delegation to the Soviet-American Historical Colloquium (1972) and to the Polish-American Historical Colloquium (1974), and wrote many books on Russia. |
