| biography:
| Novelist and poet, born in Madrid, Spain, who lived most of her life in Zaragoza. Her short novels of love and intrigue were published during her lifetime in two collections: Novelas amorosas y exemplares (Zaragoza, 1637), which all end happily; and Parte segunda del sarao, y entretenimientos honestos (Barcelona, 1647), which all end unhappily. These novels are artificially linked together somewhat in the manner of the Decamerone: they are told on successive evenings to amuse a sick woman, and bring the picaresque genre into the aristocracy. María de Zayas was praised as a poet by Lope de Vega and Castillo y Solórzano. She wrote a play called La traición en la amistad. Her novels have been edited by A González Amezúa (1948). |
