| biography:
| Poet and advocate, born in Madrid, Spain, where his house became a resort of advanced liberals. Besides his classic Vidas de los Españoles célebres (1807–34, Lives of Famous Spaniards), he published tragedies and poetry written in a classical style, the best of which are his odes, ardently patriotic yet restrained. On the restoration of Ferdinand VII he was imprisoned (1814–20), but recanted, and by 1833 had become tutor to the future Queen Isabella II (r.1833–68). He was crowned national poet by Isabella in 1855. Longfellow translated some of his poetry into English. |
