| Folklorist and ethnomusicologist, born in Plasencia, Cáceres, W Spain. His research focused on the collection, study, and analysis of music, dances, instruments, and popular traditions of Spain. He began his musical training early under the supervision of the Cathedral Choirmaster of the Plasencia, Joaquín Sánchez Ruiz, and, at the age of 18 founded the Masa Coral Placentina with 80 mixed voices. For this group he created a choreographic and vocal repertory of songs and popular dances, collected from tradition and harmonized by him. Appointed to the Chair of Folklore of the Royal Conservatory of Music (1958), which he held until his death, he published his choreography of Spanish folkloric dances, Danzas populares de España, in three volumes. |
