| biography:
| Galician historian and art critic, born in Frexel-Arteixo, La Coruña, NW Spain. The first president of the Academia Galega, he nevertheless wrote almost exclusively in Castilian. His Diccionario de escritores gallegos (1862) has been superseded by A Couceiro Freijomil's Diccionario biobibliográfico de escritores (3 vols, 1951–4) in the new Enciclopedia Gallega. An archivist by profession, he married the Galician writer Rosalía de Castro in 1858. He edited the magazine Ilustración Gallega y Asturiana (1880–3), and his major contribution was the Historia de Galicia (5 vols, 1866–80). His other works included the Galicia volume (1888) in the series España: sus monumentos y artes, and the essays Los precursores (1885). |
