| Regent, and then King of Sicily, the natural son of Frederick II and Bianca Lancia. He was first regent of Sicily for Conrad IV, his stepbrother (1250–2), and then for his nephew Corradino (1254–8). At first he tried to have Corradino's claim recognized by the pope, but then spread the rumour of his death, and had himself crowned in Palermo (1258). He defeated the Guelphs at Montaperti (1260), but was defeated at Benevento (1266) by Charles of Anjou, and died in battle. |
