| Social activist, born in Buffalo, New York, USA. She taught junior high school briefly and then worked for the Young Men's Christian Association (1926–37) and the United Presbyterian Church in New York City (1945–70). In 1971 she founded the Consultation of Older and Younger Adults for Social Change, which was soon renamed the Gray Panthers. She worked for nursing home reform, fought ageism, and claimed that ‘old people constitute America's biggest untapped and undervalued human energy source’. |
