| biography:
| Reformer and conservationist, born in New York City, New York, USA. A campaigner for women's suffrage, she turned her attention to conservation after women were granted the vote (1920), and became the crusading leader of the Emergency Conservation Committee (1929–59). She lobbied successfully for the creation of King's Canyon and Olympic national parks and for the establishment of the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary for predatory birds in Pennsylvania. |
