| biography:
| Poet and statesman, born in London, UK. He studied at Bonn, and in 1849 went to Washington as attaché and private seretary to his uncle, Henry Bulwer (1801–72). He subsequently held diplomatic posts all over Europe, before succeeding his father as second Lord Lytton in 1873. He became minister at Lisbon (1874), Viceroy of India (1876–80), Earl of Lytton (1800), and in 1887 ambassador to Paris. His works, published mostly under his pseudonym, include novels, poems, and translations from Serbian. His Indian Administration (1899) and his Letters (1906) were both edited by his daughter, Lady Betty Balfour. |
