| British writer and actress. She studied in Canada, and in London at the Italia Conti Stage School and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. After a brief career as an actress (1949–54), she joined ITN as a reporter (1955–62), taught English in Israel (1963–71), and became a full-time lecturer from 1971. Her best-known novel is The L-Shaped Room (1960, filmed 1962), and she has also written plays and biographical novels. Her many books for children include The Adventures of King Midas (1977), The Indian in the Cupboard (1980, filmed 1995), The Mystery of the Cupboard (1993), Angela and Diabola (1997), and Alice By Accident (2000). |
