| Businessman and art patron, born in Austerlitz, New York, USA. His family moved to Coxsackie, NY (c.1789), and he was schooled locally and worked in his father's store. He was a trader on the Hudson R, then joined a New York City grocery business and by 1815 he was a wealthy merchant. He subsidized and encouraged such artists as Asher B Durand, Thomas Cole, and William Sidney Mount. Upon his death his collection was donated to the New York Historical Society. |
