| biography:
| Physical anthropologist, born in Madrid, Spain. He studied at the faculty of science at the Central University of Madrid (1890), later obtaining a law degree. As a student he established his first contact with naturalists noted for their scientific and progressive political ideas, such as I Bolivar, and geologists such as J Macpherson and F Quiroga. Hoyos' knowledge in the field of geology laid the foundation for his research in agriculture, regional geography, and ethnography. As professor of anthropology of the University of Madrid, he produced Técnica antropológia (1893) and Lecciones de Antropología (1893–5). As professor of agriculture, first in the Instituto de Figueras (1895–8) and then Toledo (1898–1909), he concentrated on agronomy, an area in which he acquired fame as a journalist for his articles on farming in El Imparcial and El Sol (1917–24). In 1909 he obtained the professorship of physiology and hygiene in the University of Madrid. |
