| biography:
| Film director, born in Valencia, E Spain. He abandoned his study of philosophy and letters to join the División Azul (Blue Division). On his return he started to paint, direct short films, and work as a cinema critic for the magazine Acción and the newspaper Las Provincias. In 1947 he enrolled as a student at the Instituto de Investigaciones y Experiencias Cinematográficas, graduating two years later as a cinema director. He began his directing career with the film Esa pareja folia (1951) which he co-directed with Juan Bardem. Among his most popular films are Los jueves, milagro (1957), Bienvenido, Mr Marshall (1952), and Todos a la cárcel (1993). A teacher of film-directing at the Escual Oficial de Cinematografía and president of the Filmoteca Española from 1967, he supervises the collection of erotic literature, La sonrisa vertical. |
