biography: Scholar, born in Villaescusa de Haro, Cuenca, WC Spain. He wrote a biography William Shakespeare (1930) and translated Shakespeare into Spanish. His major work is a massive Vida ejemplar y heroica de Miguel de Cervantes de Saavedra (7 vols, 1948–58). He edited the Obras completas of Quevedo (1930), Calderón (1932), and Juan Martínez de Cuéllar's Desengaño del hombre (1928) in the series Los Clásicos Olvidados (Forgotten Classics). He also wrote Cristóbal Colon and a useful Vida azarosa de Lope de Vega (1935).
