| biography:
| Prelate and politician, born in Savigliano, Piedmont, NW Italy. He was Bishop of Casale Monferrato and became Archbishop of Milan in 1867. A senator of the Kingdom of Sardinia from 1848, in 1855 he clashed with Cavour, who intended to abolish some religious bodies. The crisis led to Cavour's brief resignation. At the first Vatican Council (1869–70), he opposed the dogma of the pope's infallibility. |
