| Military leader, politician, and prime minister (1898–1900), born in La Roche, Savoy, France. He participated in the taking of Rome (1870), became a deputy (1880), a senator (1896), and war minister. As prime minister (1898) after the bloody suppression of the Milan social rising, he gained the support of the left at first, but then clashed with them. He was defeated at the polls in 1900 and resigned. |
